A power increase (capacity upgrade) means raising the approved electrical power at your existing connection, for situations where your current installation can no longer keep up with your consumption. The process is handled through an application to the operator Retele Electrice Romania (Distributie Energie Electrica Romania), followed by a new ATR (Technical Connection Approval), a connection contract and, where necessary, modifications to the connection itself. At SUN WATT, labour starts from 350 lei (excluding the operator's own fees), and the process usually takes between 4 and 12 weeks from application to energisation.
When you need it
You need this service when your actual consumption exceeds the power approved in your contract and problems start to appear: the main breaker trips frequently, the voltage drops when several appliances start at once, or you simply cannot install powerful new equipment. Typical situations include: installing a heat pump or a powerful air-conditioning system; fitting an electric vehicle charging station; running an instant water heater, an induction hob and an electric oven at the same time; extending your home or converting it into a space used for business activity. If the power you need exceeds the usual single-phase threshold (around 11 kW), you will need to switch to a three-phase supply (400V). A few indicative power benchmarks: a 7.4 kW EV charging station (wallbox) can run on single-phase, while the 11 kW or 22 kW versions require a three-phase connection; a residential heat pump typically runs at 4-12 kW, and three-phase is recommended for the higher values in that range; for a solar inverter, the power fed back into the grid must match the power approved in the ATR, and larger systems usually require a three-phase connection.
How it works — step by step
- Assessment and Power Calculation. We check your current approved power, your actual consumption and the equipment you want to add, free of charge. Together we determine the new power you need and whether you can stay on single-phase or should move to three-phase.
- Power Increase Application + Dossier. We prepare and submit the power increase application to the operator Retele Electrice Romania (Distributie Energie Electrica Romania), together with all the required documents. We take care of all the paperwork for you.
- New ATR (Technical Connection Approval). The operator issues a new ATR (Technical Connection Approval), which sets out the technical conditions and the connection tariff for the increased power. The exact price is only known once the ATR has been issued.
- Connection Contract and Works. We sign the contract and you pay the tariff set out in the ATR. Where necessary, we carry out the modification of the connection and update the DIU (Utilisation Installation Dossier).
- New Meter and Energisation. The operator installs or replaces the meter and the supply is switched on. Your installation now runs at the increased approved power, legally and safely.
Required documents
- Identity document of the account holder (owner)
- Proof of ownership / up-to-date land registry extract
- Supply contract or a recent invoice (to identify the POD / metering point)
- Site plan and location plan
- Town planning certificate (if the increase involves an extension or construction work)
- Power increase application and the requested-power data sheet (prepared by us)

How long it takes
