Connection Cabinet (BMPM/BMPT) Installation & Replacement

The connection cabinet, called "firida de bransament" in Romanian, is the metering and protection block at the boundary of your property: the BMPM for single-phase (230V) supplies and the BMPT for three-phase (400V) supplies. It houses the meter and the main protection, and it is sealed by the distribution operator, so it can only be installed or replaced by a certified firm working in coordination with Retele Electrice Romania S.A. SUN WATT, an ANRE-certified company, installs and replaces BMPM/BMPT cabinets across Bucharest, Ilfov and Giurgiu on the basis of a personalised quote, handling all seal and meter formalities with the operator. The connection cabinet — "firida de bransament" in Romanian — is the metering and protection block mounted where your property meets the grid: the BMPM (single-phase metering and protection block) for 230V supplies and the BMPT (three-phase metering and protection block) for 400V supplies. It houses the electricity meter and the main protection, and it is normally installed at the property boundary, on the fence, on an exterior wall or on a dedicated post, so that the distribution operator has permanent access for meter reading and interventions without entering the property.

SUN WATT SRL is a company certified by ANRE (the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority) for the design and execution of electrical connections and installations. We install new BMPM/BMPT cabinets as part of connection works and replace existing ones across Bucharest, Ilfov and Giurgiu. Because the cabinet contains the meter and carries the operator's seals, every intervention must be coordinated with Retele Electrice Romania S.A. (formerly E-Distributie / Enel): seal removal, the work itself, then meter refitting and resealing. We handle these formalities for you and we work on the basis of a personalised quote, since every site differs in cabinet type, mounting and the condition of the existing connection.

When you need it

The most common reason is an enclosure that is no longer safe: a corroded or cracked cabinet, a broken door or viewing window, burnt or loose terminals, or water getting inside. A degraded cabinet is a genuine fire and electric-shock risk, and it is usually flagged by the distribution operator or by an electrician during other works. The second trigger is a change in your supply. If you apply for a power increase (a service we provide from 350 lei), the existing cabinet and its main breaker may no longer match the new approved power; switching from a single-phase to a three-phase supply (from 2,500 lei) means the BMPM is replaced with a BMPT. The same applies when consumption is being separated onto individual meters, for example two households that used to share one meter, which calls for a cabinet with multiple metering positions. Finally, a new cabinet is always part of a new connection: an overhead connection (from 1,800 lei) or an underground one (from 3,500 lei) includes a compliant BMPM or BMPT, and modernising an old connection is usually the right moment to bring the cabinet up to current standards as well.

How it works — step by step

  1. Assessment and personalised quote. We assess the existing situation from photos or through a site visit in Bucharest, Ilfov or Giurgiu: the type and condition of the current cabinet, the approved power, the mounting position and the state of the connection conductors. You then receive a clear, itemised quote covering labour plus standard materials, excluding the distribution operator's fees.
  2. Formalities with the grid operator. The cabinet carries the seals of Retele Electrice Romania S.A. and houses their meter, so the work cannot start without their involvement. We notify the operator, arrange the temporary de-energisation and the removal of the seals, and schedule the intervention. Where the replacement is part of a power increase or a new connection, the technical conditions come from the ATR (Technical Connection Approval) issued by the operator.
  3. Choosing and sizing the new cabinet. We select a compliant, operator-accepted enclosure and size it correctly: a BMPM for single-phase (230V) supplies or a BMPT for three-phase (400V), with the main breaker matched to the power approved in the ATR or the supply contract. The position is confirmed at the property boundary, with permanent access for the operator.
  4. Installation or replacement work. Our ANRE-certified electricians mount the new cabinet, transfer or remake the connections from the service conductor and towards your installation, fit the protection equipment, verify the earthing and leave the wiring tidy and clearly arranged. The work is carried out to the standards in force, so it is accepted without objections at the operator's verification.
  5. Meter refitting, resealing and re-energisation. After the work is completed, the operator refits or reconnects the meter, applies the seals on the new cabinet and re-energises the supply. We coordinate this final step so the interruption is as short as the operator's scheduling allows.
  6. Handover and documentation. You receive the work handed over with the related documents and honest guidance on what was installed. Where the cabinet is part of a new connection, we also prepare the DIU (Utilisation Installation Dossier, 1,200 lei), the document required before the meter can be fitted on a new supply.

Required documents

  • Owner's identity document (identity card)
  • Proof of ownership of the property (a recent Land Registry extract)
  • A recent electricity bill or the supply contract, for the place-of-consumption (POD) code
  • The ATR (Technical Connection Approval), where the replacement is tied to a power increase or a new connection
  • Photos of the existing cabinet and its location, for an accurate quote
  • Power increase or meter separation request, where applicable (we complete this on your behalf)

Why bransam.ro

  • A firm certified by ANRE for both design and execution, so the works and equipment are accepted by Retele Electrice Romania S.A.
  • We coordinate all seal and meter formalities with the operator, so you avoid unauthorised interventions and wasted trips
  • Correct sizing of the BMPM or BMPT to the approved power, so the main protection trips when it should and not otherwise
  • Compliant, operator-accepted cabinets and protection equipment, installed to current standards
  • Honest advice on combining the replacement with a power increase or a single-phase to three-phase upgrade, so you pay for one intervention instead of two
  • Local experience with the operator's procedures and scheduling across Bucharest, Ilfov and Giurgiu

How long it takes

The physical installation or replacement of a connection cabinet is usually completed within a working day; most of the calendar time goes on the formalities and scheduling with the distribution operator, which are outside our control. Where the cabinet is part of a power increase or a new connection, the overall journey from application to energisation typically takes around 4 to 12 weeks as a guide.

FAQ — Connection cabinet (BMPM/BMPT) installation & replacement

What is a connection cabinet (BMPM/BMPT)?

It is the enclosure at the boundary of your property that houses the electricity meter and the main protection of the connection. The BMPM is the single-phase version, for 230V supplies, and the BMPT is the three-phase version, for 400V supplies. In Romanian it is known as 'firida de bransament' or 'bloc de masura si protectie'. It is sealed by the distribution operator, Retele Electrice Romania S.A.

How much does it cost to install or replace a connection cabinet?

We work on the basis of a personalised quote, because the price depends on the cabinet type (single-phase BMPM or three-phase BMPT), the mounting situation and the condition of the existing connection. The quote covers labour plus standard materials, excluding the operator's fees; where the work is tied to a power increase or a new connection, the operator's costs are set out in the ATR (Technical Connection Approval). The quote is free and with no obligation: 0733 097 440.

Can I replace the connection cabinet myself?

No. The cabinet carries the operator's seals and houses their meter, so breaking the seals or working on it without approval is penalised and can leave you without supply. The replacement must be carried out by an ANRE-certified firm, in coordination with Retele Electrice Romania S.A., which removes the seals, refits the meter and reseals the new cabinet.

When does a connection cabinet need replacing?

The usual situations are: a corroded, cracked or water-damaged enclosure with burnt or loose terminals; a power increase that the existing cabinet and breaker can no longer support; switching from single-phase to three-phase, where the BMPM is replaced with a BMPT; separating consumption onto individual meters; and modernisation, when an old connection is brought up to current standards.

Do I need a new cabinet when I increase the approved power?

Often yes. The main breaker in the cabinet is sized for the currently approved power, so a meaningful increase usually means replacing the breaker or the whole cabinet, particularly when moving from single-phase to three-phase (from 2,500 lei), where a BMPT is required. We assist with the power increase application from 350 lei and quote the cabinet work separately, based on your site.

Where must the connection cabinet be mounted?

As a rule at the property boundary: on the street-side fence, on an exterior wall or on a dedicated post, in a position the distribution operator can reach at any time for meter reading and interventions, without entering the property. The exact position and mounting conditions are confirmed by the operator, and for new connections they are set out in the ATR.
